Donate Backpacks for Homeless Students

5 year old Xander wants to help 100 homeless kids have backpacks and school supplies so they are ready to go to school. Let’s help him by donating backpacks packed with school supplies.

All backpacks will be given to the organization School on Wheels, which provides educational services to homeless children throughout southern California.

For a homeless child, a backpack and school supplies are gold. They have no desk to call the…ir own, no quiet study area, but with a backpack, they have their own place to keep their own supplies. The potential of clean paper and colored pencils is a powerful talisman for a child with so little else in his life. Last year, School on Wheels provided over 6,000 brand-new backpacks filled with school supplies.

You can sign up online at our Facebook event OR just drop off a filled backpack at one of the our Mosaic gathering collection sites (click the link for addresses) on the upcoming dates below.

Step 1: Choose a grade level and get list of needed school supplies.

Step 2: Purchase a new bookbag and fill it with the appropriate supplies.

Step 3: Bring the bookbag to a Mosaic gathering August 29th, September 5th, or September 12th.

The Harmony Project is changing lives

serveLA just heard about the Harmony Project and we’re so stoked. What they do is simple and profound. They take at risk youth and teach them how to play classical instruments. This demographic typically has a 50% high school dropout rate. The dropout rate of the kids that complete their program: 0%.

Some of their students recently played at the Hollywood bowl. You’ve got to see what they are about and see how to contribute!

One way is a benefit concert coming up THIS Saturday, the 21st.

When: Saturday, Aug 21st, 7-8:30 pm

Where: Oneota Congregational Church (1515 Garfield ave, 91031)

How much: FREE!

Come a listen to some great solo artists, a jazz trio, and hear some inspiring stories!

Show Support for United Steps this Saturday, voluteer at Romeo & Juliet

A stellar non-profit called United Steps is putting on a play with kids from the community and could really use your help. United Steps is dedicated to creating organic community through events that invite people be proactive and network to help them take steps forward. Several serveLA volunteers have already given their time to help in preparation and now we have need of several volunteers to work the day of the event.

Where: Hayworth Theatre (2511 Wilshire Blvd)

When: This Saturday, Aug 14, from 1:30 to 4

UPDATE!!

Illuminate is changing from a free arts camp for children in the 3rd through 8th grades to an on-going after school type program. We need volunteers with a heart for children who are willing to tutor or teach various art workshops…stay tuned for more information!

Our goals:

To inspire students to use and develop their God-given talents through the creative process to serve others.

We need your help! Illuminate instructors and volunteers are people who have a passion to see young lives changed through an unleashing of their creativity. We need instructors and volunteers for the following subjects: visual art, dance, drama, music and tutors in all subject areas. We need help spreading the word throughout Pasadena! Green Irene Workshop

On Saturday, June 26th, the Green Team hosted an eco-consultant company called Green Irene. The group, comprised of mostly Westsiders, listened as Holly Fajack, our Green Irene Rep. went over ways we can conserve water, energy, and recycle at home. As we all learned about various ways to make our homes/apartments more ‘green’ we also enjoyed the delicious snacks and free give-aways!! Participants went home with a free Mosaic Green Team tote bag!

Here is an email from one of the participants…

"Thanks so much for coordinating the Green Irene workshop! Of course 

most of us are already practicing some element of it, but it did 

inspire me to do more!

I looked into the dryer balls and found that the felted wool dryer 

balls might be the best alternative (if you have to use the dryer). 

I'm so excited about this b/c i love to knit and i love wool felt!

thanks again!!!"

Come Work at Union Station Homeless Services in Pasadena this coming Tuesday night July 6th and Help Forge Men’s Group to cook and serve dinner for the Homeless.

Where: Union Station Adult Center 412 S. Raymond, Pasadena 91105

When: Tuesday July 6th from 6pm-9pm

Details: Please wear close toed shoes and come dressed in comfy and casual clothing you don’t mind cooking in. Families welcome, but best for ages 10+
